Current Status - Traffic Data

Hey there everyone! Sorry about the lack of new scans out this month but I've still got most of Boinger's macross books to get through so there's no lack of material on the way.

Above is the traffic data (rough views) for the year of 2011. The site now has about 52gb of uploaded data (removal of the old art packs lowered that some) and haven't had any real service problems with the host or site since this place went online.

Also, people have been asking about shipping books to me more in the past few months, if you're okay with long wait times and my hobby ADHD send me an email. Please note that it's likely that I'll only accept books that I personally like.

Let us hope that 2012 will go as well as last year!

Macross - Perfect Memory

Here's the first of the Macross books sent to me by Boinger from Macrossworld.
This book is a pretty comprehensive look at the SDF Macross series including sections on each episode, character and mechanical designs and more. A very cool book.
There is a poster that original comes with this book, there was no copy of it available so I included the best image of it I could.

Note- This is a pretty massive book. Even reducing the file size and image quality it's still over 600mb in size when uncompressed.

I didn't miss the anniversary of the opening of the site this year, yay! We've not had more than a (relatively minor) interruption with media hosting. For a hobby project I consider that pretty good!

First off I'd like to thank Falldog at Otaku Revolution for graciously providing massive amounts of great hosting to me. It's never gone down and always seems to be quite snappy.

Next I'd like to thank all the people who've sent in books and other content; a few incredible publications have come up seemingly from nowhere thanks to these great people.

Lastly, all of the people who've posted comments, emailed me or spread word about the site. Without you all I'd have lost the motivation to keep this place going long, long ago.

Here's to the years, and books, ahead!

Regarding the drawing, I've only gotten 6 or so emails so far. Come on, email me at drawing.archivescans@gmail.com and enter the drawing! (see comments for details)

Also, according to the poll I had up there is some interest in the 3 Pern books I've got: Atlas of Pern, Dragonrider's Guide to Pern and People of Pern. The first two are in very poor shape though. Questions or comments welcome.

As to the current scan queue, I'm pretty low on fresh books right now, save for about 3 or so, this means rescans will be more common and this will likely be the focus of another poll soon.

I've been asked about donations as well. I've never set anything up to this point, don't send money to anyone without emailing me, I don't want your money disappearing. Since I don't really have any costs associated with the site (save for the books themselves) I'm not quite sure how to go about this. Again, questions or comments welcome.

This book is chock-full of Valkyrie art from all of Macross up to Macross M-3. About all of the art focuses on Valkyries save for a bit of art for the Zentreadi designs from SDF Macross. A great book for fans of Macross, mecha in general or even mechanical enthusiasts.

Chocolate Gouache - Choco & Koichi Mugitani's Art Works

This is a great artbook pack. It's got 2 books (color and monochrome), a DVD showing the entire process Choco goes through making a piece in Photoshop, a pack of 3 very well made prints and a nice slip cover for the books. Contained within the books is a huge amount of art covering a number of subjetcs (including art from Choco's website).
I rescanned much of this pack after finding a setting in my scanners software, it helped greatly with the gutter shadow (although there is still noticeable on some pages) and kept the colors vivid.

Bioshock 2 - Collector's Edition

I was able to grab this at a clearance sale and was very surprised at the ammount of thought that went into this collector's edition. It's got an LP, CD, posters, artbook and the game all contained in a very well made box with the above picture on the cover.
I tried to be as complete as I could, just about everything that could be scanned is in the pack (save for a few bits I've omitted).
Although the game may not have quite made it to the same level as the first Bioshock this is still a great collection.

Sorry for the lag in updates, work has been unusually stressful the past few weeks. On the up side I have gotten all of my scanners replaced with newer models (B-Size is now an Epson expression 10000xl, A4-size is now an HP g4050, still waiting for the ADF's delivery), should make any future scans or re-scans much better.

I'm pretty much out of books right now, the only physical book left to scan is Chocolate Gouache (which I need to figure out how to scan) and I don't have much coming in from online right now. I guess this means re-scans will be given a higher priority until things pick back up.

More Status

Got my new book, 'Chocolate Gouache', and its a great one. Two books (color and monochrome), a packet of 3 prints on something like 11x17" paper and a DVD showing how Choco does his art (still need to watch that). Unfortunately I'm unsure if I'll be able to scan these books since the pages are very, very thick (must be aroung 90 or 100g/m²). I'm worried that I'll lose too much of the page in the gutter side of the pages. If anyone has any suggestions please let me know.

This collection originally came in a cardstock slip cover which I lost years ago.

The Art of Tron Legacy

A very cool book though more of a film book than an full artbook ('bout 50/50 art and film stills). Very nicely constructed too, it's got a sewn binding wich made it very easy to get nearly all of the page against the scanner without losing more than 3-5mm in the gutter.
As to content, it's a very well laid out book that covers the majority of the movies content with only a few missing items (light jets, gateway, a few others).

Status, Site Useage Data

-UPDATE- An emergency test started at work, meaning I'll have to be working during the weekends for the next month or so. I'll try to get the next book out but don't put money on anything.

I found that I've been gathering data from Google Analytics for just over a year now, I though you all might want to see the data. we've currently got ~50gb of active content and the highest point on that topmost graph is 27 Feb, the day I posted Serial Experiments Lain - Illustrations.
(01 April 2010 is when I added the Analytics code to the site)

As to the books I've gotten a little distracted lately (picked up bookbindi n g, seems kinda funny now that I think about it) and haven't gotten as much done here as I would have liked.
I've got a copy of FSS Chronicles 2007 disassembled and ready for scanning but I need to fix my ADF for that one. I've also got another book that I've decided has waited long enough for the scanner, this one I should get done in the next few weeks.

Also; comments help run the site. It shows me what content you all favor, lets me know if things are broken and gives me motivation to keep this place running. The more comments the better!

...Except for requests. My policy from here on out is the only way I can/will fill a request is if the book is shipped to me.

Uru - Complete Chronicles - The Official Guide

Picked this book up at Powell's recently and was pleasantly surprised with its 'Making of Uru' section. Round 100 pages devoted to the story of Cyan Worlds developing Uru and the time in between Riven and Uru (Myst 3 and 4 weren't done by Cyan). It's got some great art through out the book. I've not scanned the guide portion of the book but I did get the art from it. Please note that this was published before End of Ages was released, some of the unused content in Uru was used in it.

Lots of full page pieces, cover art and the like as well as development art and information on ABe. This book is in English too so I can actually read all of it even.
The chapter title pages have text that isn't a different color than the rest of the page, it's just much glossier. Did my best to get it but it's still hard to make out.

Books like this make me wish I could read Japanese. This one seems to have a large, almost textbook-like, section with a huge amount of information on the world of the Panzer Dragoon series with a little bit of art. It's kinda a quick scan.

I may have to wait a while to do any new scans, my main scanner died halfway through doing the Appleseed book. Using my B-Size scanner to complete the raw scan took about 9 hours, it's made for quality/size not throughput. Until I can get a hold of a new scanner I'm not going to be doing much more than reposts.

As to the Panzer Dragoon books, I'm pretty sure they are game guide books rather than artbooks so I may scan just the artwork rather than the whole book. They should get to me in a couple days and I'll make the decision after I look through them. See you then!

More of a film book than a design works book but very nicely done. It's got ~85 pages of nice stills with little text, then ~15 pages of lineart and another ~15 pages of interviews. Not a bad book at all.

New books, new scan queue

Well, this recent poll has shown a much larger amount of feedback than ones in the past. I'll be deciding the rescan queue in a couple days when the poll closes.

I've got a couple new books on the way. First is the Appleseed Prometheus Montage - Complete Works (the 2004 movie) and a couple Panzer Dragoon books (the first two games). These, along with the SE Lain book, will be the top priority for scanning. I'll try to get one of them done by the end of this month.

-Edit: Got the Appleseed book, more of a film book but very well done (lots of stills rather than pages of text). Should be scanning it soon.

Gundam Seed Astray Masters

Got this one done well ahead of schedule thanks to some automated image processing.
This book is much like the Gundam Profile TR-1 and Macross F 3d Archive books, lots of model displays including highlights on modifications as well as a fair bit of art. This one focuses on the Astray stories, the Astray units themselves and the related MS' (including some damned goofy looking ones). It's a pretty good book.

I'm helping mirror this for someone on /m/. Anima is a novel kind of like how Gundam Sentinel is (though Anima uses more illustrations). Some very cool designs have come out of this production by Ikuto Yamashita; I think they're making an artbook for it.

Status Update

Alrighty, It turns out the paper most artbooks are printed on isn't that good for an ADF-style scanner, it does still cut scan time of dissasembled books down quite a bit.

The next books I'm planning on scanning are Astray Masters and Lain Illustrations (Eng). Once I get my taxes back I hope to get a few more books, though that won't be for a couple months. Until then I've still got to re-process the Gundam books I've got, those will be posted next.

Macross Frontier - The False Songstress - Roman Album

This book is pretty simmilar to the Frontier Fan Book and the Newtype %100 books. It's got sections on the characters, story, mechanical designs and settings, storyboards and more. I, of course, wish it had more lineart and schematics for the mechanical aspects of the production but that's me.
In scanning this book I also decided to try my first de-binding. Using a hobby razor I cut the pages from the binding. The main reason I did this was that this book was too large to fit on my main scanner and too stiff to get good images from on any of my scanners. Please note that it will be pretty rare for me to do this, I like my books too much to try it again.

Well, I'd say this has been a good year for the site. We've gotten a great file host and dropped RS. I've gotten some good books scanned and we've gotten stuff contributed by more users. And, above all, I've been able to keep motivated with all of the input from visitors and contributors. Thank you all.

Also, I've been scanning Macross Frontier movie book. It's nearly 2cm too wide for my normal scanner so I ended up disassembling the book to scan on my large-format scanner. Should have it done by the end of the week.

I was quite happy to find this book at a Kinokuniya when I was on holiday.
This book covers story characters, locations, enemies, storyboards, interviews and more. Although the style has changed quite a bit since the PSO days it's still interesting, if a little too 'flowery' for my taste. It'll be interesting to see what PSO2 holds for us.
